Why Designing Together Is Harder Than It Looks

Design is often described as a collaborative process. The industry requires teamwork and good communication, with each member sharing ideas. In practice, however, designing together is far more difficult than it appears.

In collaborative settings, designers are expected to externalize their thinking through sketches, models, language, or digital media. The purpose of this is for others to be able to understand, critique, and build upon the ideas, but translation is never perfect. What is clear to the person who proposed the idea can be ambiguous, simplified, or even misinterpreted when expressed to others.

From a learning perspective, collaboration is not just about sharing ideas; it is about changing how we think. When individuals work together, they are constantly reorganizing and reconstructing their own understanding in response to others. Exposure to different points of view, approaches, and conflicting ideas can push thinking further than it would go alone. As a result, it is not uncommon for those working collaboratively to solve problems they would otherwise not be able to if they were on their own.

So, collaborative work should be straightforward, then: bring together a group of creative individuals, share concepts, and produce something better than any one person could achieve alone, right? Sadly, it’s not that easy. There are lots of internal cognitive and social dynamic challenges that designers must go through.

Much of what a designer does happens beneath the surface. Ideas are formed by applying prior knowledge and experience with a mix of intuition and rapid mental iteration. They sketch, model, and prototype not just to communicate ideas, but to explore and better understand them in the first place. This makes design inherently personal and, at times, difficult to articulate. There is also the issue of ownership, as designers often develop a strong attachment to their ideas. When ideas emerge through continued effort and iteration, being protective of your ideas is understandable. Without structure, teams can fall into unhelpful patterns. Discussions can become competitive and dismissive, with individuals defending their own ideas rather than engaging with others. Others can become overly agreeable, with ideas being accepted quickly and without critique. In both cases, the quality of thinking and, therefore, the quality of design, suffers.

This is why structure matters.

Effective collaboration requires clear roles, shared responsibility and an understanding that success is collective. High-quality design teams engage in what might be described as ‘exploratory dialogue’. Here, they question ideas, justify decisions and build on each other’s contributions. Ideas are contributed freely for the benefit of the group with the acceptance that they may be adopted, refined or rejected as necessary. Additionally, they demonstrate positive interdependence (each member relies on the others to achieve the outcome) whilst maintaining individual accountability.

This kind of interaction is not automatic. They actively support one another’s learning, communicate clearly and reflect on how well they are working together. It requires careful facilitation, shared expectations, and a supportive environment where critique is seen as a tool for improvement rather than a personal criticism. This is why positive group relationships play a significant role. Teams that know each other well, or have established ways of interacting, often collaborate more effectively. Familiarity builds trust, reduces friction and allows ideas to develop more effectively. Without this, collaboration can feel forced, slow, and unproductive.

So, although working collaboratively can be complex, it can have a profound impact on the development of a design or idea. Collaboration should be viewed as a skill; one that must be learned, taught, structured, and actively supported. Designing together is not difficult because people lack creativity. It is difficult because creativity is complex, internal and shaped through our prior knowledge, experience and social interaction.

When done well, collaboration doesn’t just combine ideas; it transforms them, and that transformation is where great design flourishes.
