Landing An Industrial Design Placement
Industrial Design placements are usually the most valuable part of a 4 year degree. The period where the most is learnt. It certainly was for me, and I know the placement students at IDC tend to agree. So, it’s important for undergraduates to do all they can to land the industrial design placement they want most. This way, you’ll learn a lot and have a great time doing it.
I was recently asked to give a talk at the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London, focusing on what advice I could give to students to help them land a placement and get their name and work known to a larger audience. I was also asked to share my own journey and a little about IDC.
Quick Fire Notes For Students:
- Sign up to Arts Thread. Upload your portfolio and enter competitions.
- Do the same for Coroflot and Behance.
- Document your journey on Instagram.
- Portfolio is everything. Nail it. (You can also check out my One-to-One Portfolio Improvement Program)
- Make everything visual. Writing paragraphs is too easy.
- Silent validation. Don’t say you’re creative, prove it.
- Figure out exactly who you want to make yourself known to. Find out what they care about.
- Constantly reach out for portfolio reviews. Great way to build your network.
- Produce discoverable content online.
- Think big. Realise it’s a global stage. Up your game. Best in your class is a small pond.
- Be very direct. Make it known exactly what you are trying to achieve.
- Put in the work.
- Watch the video above!
